Volume 1: Romance Dawn- East Blue
Chapter 1- Romance Dawn:
Romance Dawn begins with Gol D. Roger, King of the Pirates, speaking to the world before his execution. His speech inspires many to find his legendary treasure, the One Piece, and become the next Pirate King! A boy in a far-off village in the East Blue decides that he is going to be the next Pirate King and tells his dream to a pirate captain named "Red Haired" Shanks, a kind, peaceful and gentle person who always protects a friend. Luffy stabs a spot just under his eye in order to impress Shanks and his crew. At first, Shanks believes that Luffy is foolish and doesn't have what it takes, due to the fact that he can't swim. Luffy constantly tries to convince Captain Shanks that he has what it takes, and wants Shanks to take him on their next voyage. Suddenly, a group of Mountain Bandits busts in. They disturb the peace of the village, and smash glass bottles on Shanks' head. Once the Mountain Bandits leave, Shanks and his crew laugh the whole thing. Luffy is shocked that, after being humiliated, Shanks is laughing the whole thing and leaves to go find a real role model. Before Luffy can, Shanks grabs his, but suddenly, it starts to stretch! The crew realises that Luffy has partaken of the Devil Fruit (Gomu Gomu no Mi), which grants you powers, but at a cost. Eating the Devil Fruit means that you will never be able to swim for the rest of your life. Shanks prepares to leave the village, intending to never come back. Meanwhile, the Mountain Bandits return making fun of how pathetic Shanks' crew was. Luffy is infuriated by these comments, and soon, Luffy gets into a fight with the Mountain Bandits' captain, Higuma the Bear. Soon later, Shanks wonders why no one has come to give their final goodbyes, and sees Luffy being kicked by Higuma. Shanks threatens Higuma, but Higuma does not listen, and has his crew point a gun to Shanks' head. Shanks' crew then comes to his rescue, and his first mate takes care of all the small fry, leaving Higuma for Shanks. Higuma creates a wall of smoke between himself and Shanks, and steals Luffy and takes him out to sea. Meanwhile, Shanks is fretting that he let Higuma escape with Luffy as a hostage. Higuma threatens Luffy, and knows that he has eaten a Devil Fruit, which means that he also knows that Luffy will sink when pushed into water. So, Higuma kicks him off the dingy and into the water. Then, from behind Higuma, a Sea King approaches, opens his mouth wide, and eats Higuma in one bite. The Sea King then approaches Luffy, and as his mouth is just about to close on him, Shanks comes to Luffy's rescue and saves him just in time. Shanks then scares the Sea King away with his stare. Luffy then realises that at the cost of being saved, Shanks has lost his arm. As Shanks prepares to leave Luffy's village, Luffy swears that he will become the Pirate King. Shanks, gives Luffy his Straw Hat, and tells him to return once he has become a great pirate. 10 years later, Luffy begins his voyage in order to became the Pirate King and collect the best crew ever! When Luffy leaves, the Sea King that ate Shanks' arm, returns to finish off Luffy, but after training for 10 years, Luffy has developed new techniques of fighting, and uses Gomu Gomu no Pisutoru (Gum Gum Pistol). |
Chapter 2- That Guy, "Straw Hat Luffy":
Luffy has set off on his voyage to become the Pirate King, and as he floats across the ocean, he realises that he doesn't know anything about navigating, and soon realises that he is being sucked into a giant whirlpool. Luffy realises that he probably should've payed more attention to the fact that he is being sucked into a whirlpool. Meanwhile, pirate captain, Lady Alvida, an obese, yet strong pirate, is moored on an uncharted island in the East Blue. She notices that there is dust on the bulwark of her ship. She calls for her crewman to clean-it-off. The crewman pleads for his life, and begs Lady Alvida to allow him to clean the entire ship again! Alvida refuses, and kills the crewman with her iron mace. Lady Alvida then turns to Coby, the cabin boy of the ship, and asks: "Who is the most beautiful in all the sea?" Coby, frightened of Lady Alvida, replies with telling her that she she is. After this incident, Coby leaves, and returns with a barrel of rum. Lady Alvida does not know that Coby has brought a barrel of rum onto her ship. Coby wonders what to do with, and encounters three members of Alvida's crew (Heppoko, Peppoko and Poppoko). They plan on drinking the barrel dry, and blackmail Coby into keeping quiet about the matter. Seconds before they open it, Luffy bursts through the barrel as he says, "Aw! What a nice nap!" Coby and the crewman are shocked, but suddenly, an iron mace comes swinging into the room and destroys it. Luffy and Coby are separated from Alvida and the other crew-mates. They quickly blame Coby for bringing in an outsider so that they are not punished by death. Alvida believes that no one would be brave enough to attack her, and believes that it could only be one person... Roronoa Zoro. Meanwhile, Luffy is talking to Coby, and tells him that his dream is to become the Pirate King. Coby is convinced that this will never happen and also shares his dream with Luffy, that he wants to become a great marine officer. Suddenly, an iron mace comes swinging through the air, and smashes a dingy that Coby built in order to escape from Lady Alvida. Alvida gives Coby one chance, and asks him: "Who is the most beautiful in all the sea?" Coby is intimidated by this, and is reluctant to say that she is. But, he remembers that Luffy is chasing an incredible dream, and knows that he would prefer to die trying than to die without trying. With this in his mind, Coby adopt the same philosophy as Luffy, and replies to Alvida, and says that she is the "ugliest old hag of all". Alvida is enraged with this comment and swings the iron mace, aiming for Coby's head. Luffy quickly jumps in-between the path of the iron mace and Coby. The iron mace strikes Luffy on the head. Luffy looks up and tells Alvida that the iron mace could never hurt him. Lady Alvida, her crew and Coby, are shocked that anyone could survive the iron mace. In return, Luffy attacks Lady Alvida with Gomu Gomu no Pisutoru (Gum Gum Pistol). Luffy orders Alvida's crew to him and Coby a dingy. Luffy and Coby are sailing the seas, and Luffy has decided that he wants to ask Roronoa Zoro to join his crew. |
Chapter 3- Introducing Pirate Hunter Zoro:
Luffy and Coby are contemplating about whether they should allow Roronoa Zoro to join Luffy's crew. Soon later, Luffy and Coby land at Shells Town. When they first arrive, they head into a restaurant, where the name Roronoa Zoro makes civilians jump, afraid that he might escape at any moment. But surprisingly, the civilians also cower at the name of Captain Morgan, who is the captain of the navy base there, and in- charge of keeping Zoro prisoner at the base. Soon later, Coby and Luffy leave the restaurant. Luffy and Coby then make their way to the Marine Base where Roronoa Zoro is being kept. When they arrive, there is a wall between the base and where the civilians live. Inside the base, Luffy believes that Zoro is right over the edge of the wall, and lifts himself over the wall in-order to see. He spots someone standing in the middle of the of the square and tells Coby. Coby tells Luffy that there is no way the Marines would stick a "Demon Man" out in the open. He peeks over the wall, and to his surprise, it is the real Roronoa Zoro. Zoro then bargains for his life by asking Luffy and Coby, that if they untie him, he'll kill someone with a bounty on their head, and give the entire reward to them. The only reason he is bargaining for his life is because he is trapped and has gone without food for 9 days. Suddenly, a ladder hits the wall, and a small girl named Rika (the name is not mentioned in the manga). Rika then climbs down the wall and walks towards Roronoa Zoro. Coby panics, and tells to do something so that she is not killed by Zoro. Luffy does nothing, and tells Coby that if he wants to save her, he can do it himself. Rika suddenly opens up a small package, which has two rice-balls within. Zoro tells Rika, that he doesn't want her rice-balls or sympathy. Suddenly, a man comes walking into the execution square (Helmeppo, son of Captain Morgan). Coby believes that the young girl will now be safe from Roronoa Zoro. Instead, Helmeppo, steals one of Rika's rice- balls, and eats it. But as soon as he bites it, he spits it out in disgust, exclaiming that Rika's rice-ball is seasoned with sugar instead of salt. Helmeppo destroys the rice-ball with his foot. Helmeppo tells the girl, that anyone talking to Zoro is to be executed, but, since she is just a little girl, he tells a marine to chuck the girl over the fence. The marine reluctantly chucks Rika over the wall, but she is safely caught by Luffy. Helmeppo reminds Zoro that he will set him free if he survives without food for a whole month! Once Helmeppo and the marines have left the execution square, Luffy climbs over the wall to talk to Roronoa Zoro. He tells Zoro, that he will untie him if he joins his pirate crew. Zoro tells Luffy, that he has his own dreams to accomplish, and that he doesn't have time to become a pirate. Luffy begins to leave, but is stopped by Zoro who asks him to pick up the rice-ball ball that Helmeppo crushed. Luffy seems reluctant, but gives the rice-ball to him for him to eat. Zoro asks Luffy, if he will tell Rika that he ate it all up! Once Luffy meets up with Coby and Rika, and tells Rika that Zoro ate every last bite of the rice-ball. Rika explains to Luffy and Coby that Zoro is not actually that bad of a person. She tells them that he is only in prison because he was protecting her from Helmeppo's dog, Soro, that was terrorising all of the villagers. Suddenly, Helmeppo comes walking down the street, telling people to bow their heads low, or else he will tell his father (Captain Morgan) to come and kill them. Whilst walking down the street, Helmeppo yells out that Roronoa Zoro's public execution is going to be held in just 3 days. Luffy is outraged, since he specifically remembers Helmeppo saying that he would spare Zoro if he could survive without food for a whole month. Out of anger, Luffy hits Helmeppo. Luffy now decides that he is going to persuade Roronoa Zoro to join his crew. |
Chapter 4- Marine Captain Axe- Hand Morgan: Luffy, after angered about the promise Helmeppo broke, is held back by Coby so that he doesn't punch Helmeppo again. Meanwhile, Helmeppo is crawling backwards, still shocked by the action Luffy has taken, and tells him that he will get his Daddy to kill him. Rika walks up to Luffy, and tells him that he was great. When Rika's mother, Ririka, sees her talking to Luffy, and tells her that if she was seen with Luffy, the marines might think that she is his friend, and they might kill her is well. Luffy then walks off, telling Coby that he has decided that Roronoa Zoro is going to join his crew. Meanwhile, at the Marine Base, Helmeppo has just barged through the door and tells his father that he wants him to kill someone for him. This happens whilst Captain Morgan is talking to a Marine Officer. Meanwhile, outside at the execution square, Luffy is just walking towards Zoro. He talks to Zoro, and finds out that Roronoa Zoro values his swords next to his life, and tells Luffy that he would show him his skills if the Marines hadn't taken them away. Luffy then bargains with Zoro, and tells him that he will get his swords and give them to him, if Zoro agrees to join his crew. Zoro is outraged, but has no other choice. Whilst on the roof of the Marine Base, Captain "Axe- Hand", Helmeppo is telling his father to go and kill Luffy because he hit him. Morgan tells Helmeppo that he will not do his dirty work, and refuses hits Helmeppo. He says that he does not mind if Helmeppo uses his status to scare people, but he will only kill people who defy him, Captain "Axe- Hand" Morgan. A statue of Captain Morgan is being raised on the roof of the base, and mentions to Helmeppo, that he heard a small girl entered the execution square, and was talking to Roronoa Zoro. Helmeppo tells his father that he took care of the small girl (who was Rika). Captain Morgan then asks his son, whether "took care of" meant kill. Helmeppo is shocked, and tells his father that it was just a little girl and that she wouldn't have realised the consequences. Captain Morgan is outraged that the girl was not killed, and calls on Rokkaku, a Junior Marine Lieutenant, and tells him to go and kill the girl. Rokkaku says that he couldn't obey such a cruel order, Captain Morgan accuses Rokkaku of mutiny and kills him. Helmeppo is shocked that his father followed through on such a cruel punishment. Captain "Axe Hand" Morgan then tells the marine employees to raise a statue of him on the roof of the Marine Base. Meanwhile, back on the base floor, Luffy tries to think of a way to retrieve Roronoa Zoro's swords, and hears voices on the roof of the Marine Base. He believes that there might be Marines of the roof of the base, and stretches his arm up, holding on the top of the base. He then flings himself up, yelling: Gomu Gomu no Roketto (Gum Gum Rocket). Back to the roof of the Marine Base, Captain Morgan is telling the lower classes of the Marines to haul up his statue of himself. Suddenly, whilst raising it, a Marine bumps the statue on a small tower. Morgan is infuriated, and tells the Marine, that bumping the statue is like attacking him. Morgan then threatens the Marine (Ukkari) and is about to kill him, when Luffy flies over the roof of the Marine Base, and grabs onto Morgan's statue. He then lands safely, but pulls the statue half-way over the roof. The statue then cracks into two pieces. Morgan orders Luffy's immediate execution, and Helmeppo tries to tell his Father that if he had killed him in the first place, none of this would have ever happen. Suddenly Luffy grabs and drags Helmeppo into the base. Morgan spots Coby trying to untie Zoro. Morgan believes that the towns-folk are going through with a mutiny, and Coby is shot in the shoulder. |
Chapter 5- Pirate King and Master Swordsman:
Chapter 5 of One Piece begins with Monkey D. Luffy dragging Helmeppo on the ground through the navy base. Luffy asks Helmeppo where Roronoa Zoro's swords are, and Helmeppo tells him that they are in his room and that they passed them ages ago. Suddenly, a few Marines come, and threaten to shoot Luffy. But Luffy holds Helmeppo up as a human shield, forcing the Marines not to shoot. Meanwhile, on the grounds of the base, Coby is still trying to grasp the fact that he has been shot. Zoro tries to convince Coby to leave because he will be released if he can survive a whole month. Coby tells Zoro that he cannot run because he execution is to be held soon, and tells Zoro that that is why Luffy punched Helmeppo. Whilst they are talking, Marines, along with Morgan, are on the grounds of the base, holding guns and prepared to shoot. Luffy has finally found Zoro's swords, but he finds three swords, and doesn't know which are Zoro's. Back on the base floor, Morgan is about to give the orders to fire all guns, but Zoro remembers a promise he made, and a flashback occurs. Zoro is at his dojo, and is on the ground at Kuina's mercy. Kuina states that that battle was the 2000th battle, and that she has won every single time. Kuina calls Zoro weak. Other students at the dojo object this comment, and tell Kuina that Zoro can even beat grown-ups. Kuina states that none of that matters if he cannot beat her. The sensei of the dojo then enters the room, to quickly be accused of the other trainees if he is teaching Kuina in secret because she is his daughter. He reminds Zoro that Kuina is older than him. Later that night, Zoro meets up with Kuina again and challenges her to a duel with real swords. Kuina accepts this proposal. When the duel breaks out, Zoro is annihilated and loses in one strike from Kuina. Zoro is frustrated that he has now lost to her 2001 times. But suddenly, Kuina starts to cry. Zoro is confused, and Kuina tells him the reason of her sorrows. She tells him, that as girls get older, they start to develop breasts, and physically, boys surpass girls in strength. She states that she wishes she was born a boy. Zoro is outraged at this comment, and tells Kuina that it doesn't matter if she is a boy or girl. They then promise each-other that one day, one of them will become the world's greatest swordsmen. The next day, a great surprise comes to both Zoro and the entire dojo. Kuina is found dead, due to the fact that she fell down the stairs. Zoro is frustrated since they had made the promise the night before, and vows to fulfill the promise himself. He then asks his sensei if he may have her sword. The sensei says he may. Once the flashback has finished, we see the Marines pointing their guns at Roronoa Zoro and Coby. They then fire then guns. But, Luffy flings himself in front of them, and the bullets deflect right off of him since he is made of rubber. He then makes a deal with Zoro which is that Luffy will untie him, give him his swords and help him fight the navy, if he joins his crew. Zoro accepts. |
Chapter 6- The First Crew Member:
Luffy is excited and happy to hear that Zoro will join his crew. Meanwhile, Morgan tells his men that he must've partaken of the Devil Fruit. Morgan tells his officers, that if guns do not work on him, then blades must. Coby awakens after fainting from the gun shot, and sees the Marines charging. Luffy manages to untie Zoro just in time, and Zoro manages to holds off several Marines whilst hardly moving. Zoro unleashes a threat to the Marines, saying that if anyone moves, he will kill them instantly. Zoro tells Luffy, that now he has fought the Marines, he is officially branded a criminal. He says that he will not go against his word of becoming a pirate, but tells him that he has plans of becoming of the world's greatest swordsman, and will kill him if he gets in the way. Luffy says that that would be great for the future king of the pirates. Morgan yells at his officers to fight and hack down Zoro. Luffy tells Zoro to duck, and wipes out all of the Marines with one shot of him Gomu Gomu no Hoippu (Gum Gum Whip). The Marines believe that they cannot defeat a possessor of the Devil Fruit as well as Roronoa Zoro. Morgan, enraged at this comment, tells all Marines who just said that, to shoot themselves in the head. Luffy then sprints towards Captain Morgan and says that he is Morgan's enemy, not his own men. Luffy attacks Morgan. During their fight, Morgan shows just how sharp his axe actually is, managing to cut a fence in half. But Luffy begins to dominate. Suddenly, Helmeppo poses a threat to Luffy by telling him to stop punching his Father or he will shoot Coby in the head. Luffy punches Morgan one more time. Helmeppo yells and tells Luffy to stop. Coby says to Luffy to just let him die. Instead, Luffy lands Gomu Gomu no Pisutoru (Gum Gum Pistol) on Helmeppo. Morgan seizes this opportunity and swings to kill Luffy, but just in time, Zoro defeats Morgan. |
Chapter 7- Friends:
From last chapter, Captain "Axe-Hand" is currently lying unconscious. Both shocked and joyous, the other Marines do not arrest either Zoro of Luffy for their crimes. The effects of not eating nine days finally come to Zoro. He collapses due to starvation. Later on, Luffy, Zoro and Coby are back at Rika's home and are being feed by Rika and her Mother. Coby questions whether they should pay for the food, but the host's say that it is on the house. Zoro asks Luffy what they will be doing once they leave the town. He replies by saying that they will go to the Grand Line in order to search for the One Piece, the most legendary treasure in the world. Coby is shocked that they will be heading to the Grand Line with only two members in their crew. Zoro says that it doesn't concern him. But Coby says that they are friends so he should be allowed to get worried. Whilst talking, Zoro mentions that Coby will not be able to join the Marines if they find out about his past life as a cabin boy on Alvida's ship. Suddenly, Marine Officers arrive. They question Luffy as to whether he is a pirate or not. Luffy confirms their suspicions, stating that Zoro is his first crew member, making him an official pirate captain. The Marines ask them to leave town (since they are pirates), but agree not to report the incident to Marine HQ (Marine Headquarters). The citizens of Shells town are outraged, Luffy and Zoro leave without resistance. The Officer also asks as to whether Coby is in cahoots with the pirates. He declines. The Officer then asks Luffy the same question. Luffy then mentions that Coby used to work for Alvida (not using her name but describing her). Coby, shocked and angry at Luffy telling the Marines, punches him. Luffy punches him back. The fight continues, and the Marine Officer tells them to stop and that it is obvious they are not friends. Luffy and Zoro are then ordered to leave. Whilst Coby is lying one the ground, he leaps up, stating that he wishes to join the Marines. The Marine Officer accepts his proposal, even after knowing his history with Alvida. Coby finally realises that Luffy was trying to protect him. Luffy and Zoro prepare to leave, and are about to set off when Coby arrives to thank Luffy. He salutes him. Suddenly, the Marine Officer arrives and witnesses Coby saluting Luffy. Suddenly, all of the Marines salute Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro. The leading officer then says that saluting pirates is violating the Marine code, and announces that they will go a week without food, after commenting as to how Luffy has made a good friend. |
